Camden’s Electric Ballroom hosts a summer party for UK hip hop’s leading label on Friday 22nd of July, as High Focus show off a long list of their resident artists. The event will act as an album launch for Ed Scissor & Lamplighter, making it an extra special occasion for celebration.
High Focus artists are varied, but their thoughtful, impactful and artistic take on MCing and beat making provides the label with a strong and distinctive identity. Led by founder Fliptrix and his collective The Four Owls (also featuring Verb T, Leaf Dog and BVA), the label promotes independent artists and strives to impart wisdom, with extraordinary linguists like Edward Scissortongue, Chester P and Dabbla combining with productions by master composers like Molotov. The label is home to a rich array of artists, and all of the aforementioned will be performing alongside Ramson Badbonez & Jazz T, Chillman, DVLGNG and a few others off the High Focus rota, with the Camden venue also inviting Boom Bap Festival to run proceedings in room 2.
Most importantly, the party will usher in the new album from Ed Scissor & Lamplighter, who present Tell Them It’s Winter for the first time. Sparse, eery and strung together in imagination of a post-disaster world, the album takes Ed Scissor’s trademark melancholia and fleshes it out with the shadowy beats and pensive melodies that Glaswegian Lamplighter brings to the table. Skulking through a moody film noir atmosphere, the pair examine objects of dissatisfaction in their darkened social commentaries, and the entrancing new album should make for an emotional live show. The album is now available for pre-order ahead of its release on on July 15th.
The summer party will begin at 9pm, with last entry into Electric Ballroom at 1am. Possibly a contender for the genre’s best event of the summer, joining High Focus should be a priority for any London hip hop fans.
