Mint Club has made some prime bookings already this year, not struggling at all to keep the dance floor swarmed. On this occasion Mint Presents welcomed Little Dragon’s Fred and Erik followed by house DJ Leon Vynehall. After mad raving reviews of their recent DJ set’s on line-ups featuring big names such as Seth Troxler, it was exciting to have the Little Dragon boys behind the snug decks at Mint. The club filled up fast as Reece Platts kicked the night off with a chilled tech-house set. As the crowd waited anxiously for the headline acts there was a buzz in the air, the calm before the storm.
Little Dragon began their set with piercing sounds, drawing the crowd towards the booth. The duo’s talent was demonstrated as they took charge of the decks and reflected the band’s synth pop sound in their set. Mint provided us with the chance to see the duo that have headlined at huge festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival in an intimate environment, and the energy in the room was electric. The two bounced off each other, creating an unforgettable atmosphere underneath the rainbow canopy that was lit above us. Smoke machines blinded the club creating a haze amongst the dancefloor, enhancing the heavy bass revelling beneath our feet. At the peak of the set the crowd was greeted by thumping techno, which was undoubtedly well received.
A personal highlight was catching Leon Vynehall just before his set. Excited to go on he told me he’d ‘give the crowd what they want’ and he delivered when he dropped Butterflies, a favourite of mine. Leon exceeded expectations as he showcased not only his mixing but his production skills, with slow building synths, chords and incredible vocal samples. The crowd went wild upon recognition of the infamous alt-dance track by New Order Blue Monday and as Leon jammed he interacted with us humbly from behind the decks. Overall the night was a huge success, supple sounds filled the floor until the lights came on. We are undeniably looking forward to welcoming these guys back to Leeds and what else Mint has to offer throughout the rest of the year.
