As Gorgon City, together Matt Robson-Scott and Kye Gibbon are proving themselves to be one of the hottest duos on the UK electronic music scene with a plethora of releases on Black Butter Records - including the undeniable hit Real featuring good friend of the pairing Yasmin - and a DJ scheduled that is probably as full as it ever could be. Already backed by Radio 1, 2013 has been a huge year for the duo and with a much anticipated album release set for the beginning of 2014 things continue to be on the up.
We caught up with Matt, one half of Gorgon City, earlier this week just after they returned from a tour of Australian which saw Matt and Kye supporting Rudimental as well as taking in some headline shows of their own. Check out the full interview below ahead of Gorgon City gigs at Circus (Liverpool), Control (Leeds), and Detonate (Nottingham).
You've just been in Australia for two weeks, can you tell us about the trip?
Yeah, it was really good. We were supporting Rudimental on their tour, so it was around two and half weeks going around doing big shows as well as doing some of our own shows on the side.
How were your headline shows?
Yeah, they were really good. Highlights were; this place called Revolver in Melbourne, which was amazing, really good vibe, just crazy non stop partying that went on for days and we played after Yasmin, who came along and DJ'd as well.

What else have you been up with your summer?
Just loads of shows really. We had a residency in Ibiza at Space for Carl Cox and of course we had a lot of festival sets as well.
How many times were you over in Ibiza this summer?
I think in total we went over twelve times, that included doing shows at other clubs like Privilege, Amnesia and... maybe somewhere else – I can't really remember!
Is this the first year that you've spend quite a lot of time over in Ibiza or have you played there before?
I think I've played their once. Kye, the other guy in Gorgon City, he's been playing for We Love... at Space over the past few years so he's been out their quite a lot but I've only been played their a couple of times before so this was definitely the first time I've spent a lot time there so yeah, it was a lot of fun.
It was amazing. The partying was amazing, the gigs were amazing, just everything out there is so great. We love the island and going to all the beaches, trying out the local food and just the vibe, we just love the vibe of Ibiza. We're both massive fans, we love it!
Can you remember any stand out sets you saw whilst you were out there?
Carl Cox smashed it every time for sure. Went to DC10 to see Loco Dice and Jamie Jones, and Dusky were playing there as well – that was a really good night. We went to Booom! as well for Defected, which was a new opening this year on the island, I thought the sound system was really good and the layout was cool, quite unique – I was impressed.
You've got really strong ties with the Black Butter Records crew, how important has it been for you and Kye over the past 12 months to have that unit around you?
Yeah, it's been really important and it's also to do with our management as they're in the same crew as the label, so it's all linked up. Everyone helps each other out and makes sure everyone is able to do what they want to do. It's a great team to have around you, who get you more opportunities and chances to work with other musicians and just generally help out.
So back in the day, how did you and Kye meet?
Just through DJing really. Back then we were on the same agency when we were doing our solo projects and we just had the idea one night when we were DJing together at a club and then that next week we got into the studio just to do a one off collaboration. Then because it went so well we decided to turn it into it's own project. It was kind of random, but it worked out well.
Your track, Real, with Yasmin reached well over one million views on Youtube last month, did you expect the project to be so successful when you first started Gorgon City?
No, not really. We had no idea, it was all quite random and natural the way it all came together and happened. Nothing was planned, we just wrote the song with Yasmin and it turned out really cool and quite unique and fresh sounding. It just sort of just happened and snow balled from there.
Are you finding much time around your tour schedule to get in the studio at the moment?
We're getting a little bit of time. After we got back from Australia we had a good week in the studio. Now we're knuckling down to finish the album. This week we're touring again with Rudimental in the UK, tonight we're playing in Bristol, but from November onwards we're going to be back in the studio finishing the album.
When do you see the album being ready for release?
We haven't got a proper release date as of yet, but it'll be early next year.
In a couple of weeks you'll be playing in Liverpool for the Circus Halloween party. You played their earlier in the year, are you looking forward to going back?
Yeah, it's definitely one of our favourite nights that we've played at as Gorgon City. The vibe's just really good, kind of feels like you could be in Ibiza when you're up there in front of that crowd. There's always a really good vibe between the other DJs, the music is always amazing, Yousef's great – he's a great promoter and really good host, always friendly and stuff. We're really looking forward to it.
Circus' Halloween parties are famed for their fancy dress element, will you be dressing up?
Oh really, well there's no plans at the moment but that's one I'll have to speak to Kye about!
