Since his debut single, The Tide, was released back in 2011 on Joris Voorn’s label Rejected, 26-year-old Mark Fanciulli has come on leaps and bounds that have given him status amongst the many elite DJs and producers of today. Having played across the globe at the majority of the worlds most iconic parties, doubled with releases on a long line of strong labels, Mark has achieved so much in a fairly short space of time, and is only looking to further his efforts. We caught up with him ahead of his appearance at Saved Records label party at London’s Fire and Lightbox, taking place at the end of the month.
Hi Mark! How are you doing today?
I’m good thanks. I’ve just been in the studio bouncing off a new collab that I’ve done with Secondcity and I'm in the middle of buying some new music for the BPM shows - I’m playing for Saved at Blue Parrot, and Cadenza vs. Planet E at Mamitas over the week.
How was your Christmas and New Year? Has it been a busy festive period for you or was it a good opportunity to relax and rejuvenate?
Christmas couldn’t have been any better this year. I spent a lot of time with my family with also included a lot of relaxation and I also got to play some great shows across Europe.
Straight away as we’ve shot into 2015 you’ve got some pretty exciting stuff lined up, including your 2 dates at BPM festival over in Mexico’s Playa Del Carmen. Is this the first time you’re heading over there to this festival?
This will be my second visit to BPM. Last year was a lot of fun and from looking at how its shaping up, 2015 is going to be an even better one. It’s always a lot of fun as so many of your peers and friends are there, so you get to hang out and see some amazing DJs.
Your two gigs over there are for Saved and also Planet E & Cadenza’s party at Mamita’s Beach Club. Have Luciano and Carl Craig been strong musical influences for you during your growth as an artist?
They definitely have. Carl has influenced me with his innovative productions which always stand out and make people excited and Luciano is an artist that can bring a lot of energy and vibe during his sets. I think releasing on Planet E has been a standout moment for me over the past couple of years.
Your releases on the label have all been well fronted by a long line of DJs, our favourite being ‘Game Plan’ that was released back in 2013. Do you have any more upcoming material on Saved that you can tell us about?
My next release will be a collaboration with my brother where one side is a single from him and the other a single from me.
It's got a real disco vibe with a latin twist and I’m confident it’ll be played into the summer.
Expect the release to come around March / April this year. I’m also working a lot outside of Saved, with a single coming on DFTD in February.
For the last 2 years we have been treated to an electronic musical gathering in your hometown of Maidstone that is The Social, which has welcomed the likes of Seth Troxler, tINI and Craig Richards. Can we expect to see The Social returning in 2015?
The guys have launched another event called the Winter Social which is taking place next month and although I don’t know the plans for the main festival, I would be really surprised if the Social doesn’t return later in the years also.
Since your early releases a mere 4 years ago that shot you to being amongst the hottest upcoming musical talent, you’ve ripened and refined your musical style and remained amongst the best. Could you now name some new school faces that you think will be following in your footsteps during the coming years?
I think Wigbert and Okabi, they have different sounds but both are fantastic. I can see them moving fast this year.
Finally, after your Mexican adventure you will be flying back to London to play at Fire in London with the Saved crew that includes Nic, &ME, Pirupa and Circo Loco heavyweight Davide Squillace. How do you think this will round off the first month of the year?
I don’t think there could be a better way to round off the month. Playing a Saved show is something very special to me and always will be. It's a fun, family occasion, and the lineup is amazing.
Tickets for Saved at Fire London, which features Mark as well as Nic Fanciulli, Davide Squillace and many more can be purchased here.
