DJ and producer Joe Saunders, also known as SEFF, is gaining momentum in the world of electronic music, as he has been drawing attention from a number of exciting places over the past year. With releases on VIVa MUSiC and a forthcoming EP on Hot Creations, it looks like this year will be his year. We got to ask him a few questions ahead of his appearance at Fez Club in Sheffield.
Hi Joe, how are you doing? Did you have a good Christmas and New Year?
Hi, all good thank you! yeah had a bit of a quiet Christmas this year but played in Plymouth on Boxing Day at Casa and then at Lightbox in London the day after which were both really good and then New Year just had a small house party at a friends (and then I got home 3 days later as I went elsewhere afterwards and didn't want the party to end, standard).
You seem to have risen out of the depths so fast over the past year. Have you noticed things getting busier and more exciting?
Yeah totally, things are getting so busy at the moment, I never expected it to happen so fast so to speak but it’s amazing to see all of my hard work finally paying off as I’ve been in the music scene a lot longer than before I even started the SEFF moniker.
You have your forthcoming EP on Hot Creations that is due to hit the shelves and day now. How did that come about?
Richy Ahmed approached me about doing an EP or 2 on Hot Creations back in April so it’s been going on since then really, hence the slow release schedule for me since then But quality over quantity is obviously the main thing anyway for me so it’s worked out quite well with the timing.
Has your music been influenced by any of the artists already on the Hot Creations roster?
I actually just try to do my own thing which is probably why I got snapped up by them in the first place. They are all amazing artists in their own right and I play most of their material in my sets but it is hard to not be influenced by any of them for sure.
Your own label Mindmaze Music has been the platform on which you’ve released most of your music in the past. Do you intend to keep this going now you’ve caught the attention of the big guns?
Definitely plan on releasing more of my own stuff on there in the future when I have the chance to, at the moment I don’t as all of my music is tied up with other labels but certainly will be going back to it when I can and will also be signing more quality talent to the label.
As a name who is currently rising up in the world of music, do you have any ‘ones to watch’ who might see a rise like yours in the coming years?
There’s so many, but I’d definitely say to keep an eye on what’s happening with Underground Artists as Kal (my agent) seems to have a great ear for new talent and really helping them to push forward in the scene. The same with Hot creations and VIVa.
Is there anywhere you have dreamt of playing since you begin your DJ career?
DC10, Sankeys Ibiza and Manchester, Amnesia Terrace, Space, Glastonbury and more recently BPM Festival in Mexico, just to name a few but I’m sure there are plenty more, I could go on forever.
On the 24th of January you have a date at Fez Club in Sheffield. Have you visited the city much before and are you looking forward to playing here?
Really looking forward to playing there, heard great things and I’ve never played Sheffield before so can’t wait.
