This month, one poolside stage will play host to a revolving cast of musical heavyweights including Nas, Rudimental and Mark Ronson. Set in its very own hotel in San Antonio, Ibiza Rocks has assembled a stellar line-up for July. Tinie Tempah and Gorgon City have already provided an electric start. With Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg and Example among those still to pick their way around the sunloungers to the stage, the rest of the month promises a slew of unmissable sets.
Ibiza Rocks gives some of the world's biggest artists the chance to play to sun-kissed revellers in the idyllic setting of La Isla Blanca. Aside from the off chance of glimpsing Jake Bugg in his swimmers, or Ed Sheeran covered in factor 50, Ibiza Rocks offers an unique musical context.
What started in 2005 the basement of Manumission has grown into an institution that has begun to give Ibiza an identity in rock circles. In 2008, The Ibiza Rocks Hotel opened its doors. Two years later, the Mallorca Rocks hotel opened in Magaluf. To date, a list of artists including Florence & The Machine, Dizzee Rascal and The Streets have rocked Ibiza's outdoor stage. Pioneers including James Murphy's LCD Soundsystem and legends like The Specials have also played.
This year's Ibiza Rocks line-up follows in those illustrious footsteps. On 7th July electro trailblazer Giorgio Moroder will play Ibiza Rocks House at Pacha, an extension outside the hotel shows. Many of the acts on this year's bill and those in the past are indebted to Moroder's exploratory electronic music. Two days later, a totemic figure in US hip-hop hits the stage. Nas will celebrate the 20th anniversary of what grew to be a seminal album for the genre. The New York MC will play 'Illmatic' in full to what is sure to be wildly appreciative crowd of corkscrewing bodies. Mark Ronson and Zane Lowe follow on 11th. The ever-changing musician and DJ will be joined by the Radio 1 man for a night of eclectic tunes. Zane Lowe, who identifies so strongly with the rock-championing heart of Ibiza Rocks, will surely be pumped for this one.
Zane Lowe also closes the month at Mallorca Rocks on 31st July. He's not the only artist to appear on both islands, Example (10th), Jake Bugg (15th), Ed Sheeran (22nd) and Rudimental (29th) will also play in Mallorca. Mallorca Rocks' line-up is completed by rising dubstep and electro DJ Skrillex (8th) and summer smash hit Duke Dumont (24th).
On 14th July, Ibiza Rocks returns to legendary club and Ibiza institution Pacha. Long-time New York house DJ Roger Sanchez will play as The S Man. Up against him is UK house graduate Huxley, a rampant, uncompromising selector who was raised on UKG and US and UK house. Also on the bill are Kevin Saunderson, Soul Clap and The Magician. Two days later, back by the pool, an artist who marries entirely with Ibiza Rocks' raison d'être will play. Simply, there is no way Jake Bugg would have played in a setting such as this without Ibiza Rocks. Bringing his grimy tales of Nottingham suburbia and teenage disaffection, the mop top singer's set will be one of the season's highlights. Bugg recently headlined Glastonbury's second stage and his Ibiza show slots neatly into a summer of huge performances.
As the month moves into its second half, Example, who has form with Ibiza Rocks, is set to play. The London singer will perform on 18th July. Still riding the wave of recent single 'Stay With Me (One More Day)', he will bring big beats, even bigger choruses and a sense of humour. Example's songs seem purpose built for outdoor stages and exuberant fans, so this Ibiza Rocks performance won't be easily forgotten. On July 21st, Pete Tong leads the charge back to Pacha. Pete Tong and Pacha are synonymous with both the dance world and Ibiza, expect a night of surging highs.
Ed Sheeran leads the run-in to the end of the month. The chart-topping singer has just released 'X', his second album, and will air a selection of its tracks at Ibiza Rocks, on a night when the event celebrates its ninth birthday. A second performance from Example on 25th precedes 2manydjs at Pacha on 28th and a live set from Rudimental to close out the month on 30th.
