Ketoloco are holding not one, but two tantalising events to mark 7 years of yet another events brand to burgeon out of Leeds. First up on Friday 1st November in London the Ketoloco 7th Birthday line-up consists of a broad spectrum of dance music and marks a timeline of artists; going as far back to the days where house music was conceived with Chicago house pioneer Chez Damier; Nu Disco, thick synth practicing Jay Shepheard; Berlin- based techno and tech house duo, Tale Of Us; deep house forerunner Mario Basanov and the RnB- infused, garage flavours of Ejeca.
What can we say about Chez Damier that hasn’t already been said? An icon within the scene, he has a career spanning four decades and was releasing revolutionary, avant-garde music in the 1990s that was so far ahead of its game, many revellers are only just beginning to catch up. The fact that his music can sit perfectly and stand tall amongst some of today’s fresh and young talent is a strong testament to this man’s raw, unadulterated talent. He is, and always has been a firm believer in the notion to advocate new- fangled, forward thinking music. With tracks like Teach Me, Keep Me, and the obvious classic Can You Feel It, it’s no wonder that this revered musician is still one of the most sought after acts to have on a line up.
Representing Belfast is an artist that I believe leads by the example consigned by Chez Damier. Likewise, Ejeca is a pioneer of the concept of forward thinking music. Laden with the sweetest of vocal snippets, mixed with layers of gorgeous synth and piano riffs, his music is emotionally uplifting whist still maintaining that key underground club vibe. Take Night Rays, and his sumptuous piano mix of You, (which was a collaboration with Bicep) as examples of music creating extraordinary atmospheres on a dance floor.
Berlin- based house, techno and disco producer Jay Shepheard also makes an appearance on the first leg of the 7 Year anniversary party. Starting off as a music PR for Juno he since switched to producing and has been releasing original tracks on Tsuba, Get Physical and Retrofit whilst also remixing for the likes of Finnebassen, Martin Dawson, Pezzner and even the Friendly Fires. Playing an exclusive live set on the night, expect to see a diverse, extensive joyful mix of light hearted disco right down to the more profound realms of deep house and techno.
Headlining part 2 in Leeds is Tale Of Us. With their first full debut EP being put out on Visionquest in 2011 and tracks being featured on Ninja Tune, Southern Fried, Cocoon and Crosstown Rebels, it’s no wonder that these boys have become a staple name in dance music of late. With tracks such a Wind Of Late and Another Earth, their fame can only grow and are certainly an act you don’t want to miss out on.
Since the release of We Are Child of Love, Mario Basanov has been causing up a storm in the world of deep house, a market that has, in recent times, been saturated and inundated with artists. His work as Ten Walls has been killing the dance floor too; one of the tracks of the summer, Gotham, has been supported heavily from artists such as Disclosure on their Essential Mix to Scuba’s, After Hours mix series. Mario’s production is outstanding whilst his technical ability on the decks are just as notable; genres aren’t boundaries with this boy, and his repertoire will include underground dance floor bombs from every aspect of electronic music.
Part one of the Ketoloco soiree takes place at an East London warehouse with an intimate 500 capacity crowd whereas part two takes the party back to their birthplace in Leeds at the Mint Club. Tickets are still available for both, so make sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
