The exceptional Amsterdam festival Dekmantel came to its 2017 close yesterday, but for those wishing they could experience it all over Boiler Room have uploaded streams of each of the three days, with the likes of Helena Hauff, DJ Bone, Jayda G, Nina Kraviz and more showing off their best moves in front of the Boiler Room cameras. With stand out sets on all three days, the jury’s out on which set of artists served up the best action, but for us the closing day might just have taken the prize.
Opening up with Dutch sass-monger and Wham fanatic Young Marco, Sunday got off to an eclectic start, and with Esa of Worldwide FM among other ventures following up, the day’s music never looked like dipping in quality. As is nearly always assured when Boiler Room hook up with a brand as respected as Dekmantel, results were exquisite throughout, with Bufiman and Cinnaman bringing the party tunes out in style before Peach Discs head Shanti Celeste brought a healthy dose of captivating techno, house and assorted other bumpers.
With the end of Celeste’s set the harder stuff was about to begin, with DJ Bone cutting rhythmically between pumping house and stormy techno with his crossfader-centric style of mixing. Handing over to Blawan and things were only going to get more dangerous, with gurgling, dystopian techno snarlers and abrasive acid breaking out on numerous occasions as he laid the groundwork for Helena Hauff to tear the festival apart with her headline set. Arguably the most in-form DJ around at the moment, the electro and breaks master did exactly what we knew she would, causing havoc with some of the most unhinged music tunes to ever work perfectly on the dancefloor. A suitable conclusion to a festival that seeks to push boundaries whilst presenting house and techno’s coolest artists, Hauff’s final hour in this eight hour long video makes for some pretty essential viewing.
Warning: Watching the full eight hours will leave you wanting to see these artists live, but fortunately that isn’t such a difficult urge to satisfy...
Helena Hauff appears at Sunfall and Dimensions, with the former also featuring Shanti Celeste, whilst The Warehouse Project has the pleasure of hosting an entire evening at the hands of Dekmantel in November, with Esa, Young Marco, Shanti Celeste and more on the bill. WHP17 also boasts DJ Bone, whose appearance comes as part of the Mastermix night on Saturday 16th September. For those not able to get to Manchester, Bristol’s In:Motion will showcase Young Marco alongside Steffi, Virginia, DJ Harvey and Interstellar Funk for a Just Jack takeover before Halloween.
