It’s been an eventful season for Leeds’ prime party starters Butter Side Up, so it’s fitting that they’ve got a special night booked in to finish it off: Call Super playing a four hour set at Wire on Friday 19th May. A selector whose stock is rising with every performance, the Berlin-based signee to Dekmantel, The Trilogy Tapes and Houndstooth will demonstrate the far-reaching selections that have marked him out as one of the most exciting young talents around.
Call Super’s ascent kicked into gear in 2014 with a debut LP titled Suzi Ecto, building on earlier EPs on Houndstooth with a masterpiece in spaced out techno. Travelling through shimmering melodic passages and dark episodes, the album showed a masterful appreciation of texture and space, leaving each track plenty of room to expand gradually through sparse use of percussion and subtle progressions. Similarly abstract productions have followed, some with greater attention placed on dancefloor suitability, but it is in his DJ sets that Call Super has achieved the most impressive hike in reputation, with trips into regions that are often unexplored by less patient diggers. Using his sets to examine the roots of dance music as well as the cutting edge productions of today, Call Super is up there with the best of them when it comes to slicing techno and UK bass with disco, afrobeat and more, and so there are few better suited to signing off on another fine year of Butter Side Up.
