Jarvis Cocker offers some self-isolation consolation

Jarvis Cocker offers some self-isolation consolation

Lorna Gray | Latest News

Amidst the current chaos of the COVID-19 crisis, take solace in Britpop’s favourite geography teacher as he’s offering some consolation in what can be a trying time. As one of the latest artists taking action in postponing their tours to keep his fans safe, he’s suggesting some ways to stay occupied, including recommending some films to bide your time.

You could always delve into the extensive back catalogue of Cocker’s britpop project Pulp, it’ll take you nine and a half hours to get through every album, and almost thirteen hours if you include live albums, EPs and singles, which is an exceptional way to spend half a day. But for those after something a bit fresher, Jarvis is steadily releasing new tracks from his current project  - aptly named JARV IS - before dropping a complete album Beyond The Pale on September 4th. The latest teaser single ‘House Music All Night Long’ offers a funky take on Cocker’s usual yet unusual style, featuring some now all-too-fitting lyrics that include, ‘Saturday Night Cabin Fever in House Nation’ as well as ‘Goddam this claustrophobia!’ - it’s almost as if he knew. You can listen via YouTube below.

If you’ve already worked your way through those tunes, Jarvis Cocker suggests some watching material perfect for time spent at home self-quarantining and in a brand new Instagram series with writer and partner of the former Pulp frontman, Jarvis listed some of his favourite feel-good films.
See the list below.

I guess this is an obvious one but wouldn’t we all like to fly free like a kestrel with its jesses off at the moment?

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
It’s pretty difficult to be in a bad mood whilst watching this film. Gene Wilder’s first appearance is a moment of pure movie magic.

Batman Returns
The Penguin’s Gotham City is frighteningly similar to Tr*mp’s America. Listen out for a v good version of “U Can’t Touch This” at an arty party.

Glastonbury Fayre
I was so looking forward to playing at Glastonbury’s 50th birthday this year. This Nic Roeg film from 1971 can help us get over the disappointment of the cancellation.

The Leopard
"If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change.” -thus says Burt Lancaster towards the end of Visconti’s masterpiece. Wise words.
