Magda and Mike Servito to lead XOYO in a journey through Detroit

Magda and Mike Servito to lead XOYO in a journey through Detroit

Andrew Kemp | Latest News

A central pillar in dance music history, America’s Motor City has been the birthplace of many of the greatest electronic artists of all time, from techno’s pioneers like Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson to the modern experts in soul like Theo Parrish, Moodymann and Marcellus Pittman. Shaping the city’s sounds with its heavily industrial aesthetic, Detroit is the place where much of the music we dance to in clubs began, matched only by Chicago for its importance to the growth of house and techno. Seeking to explore the influence that Detroit has had on house, techno and electro, XOYO have invited Magda and Mike Servito, two modern figureheads of the city, to explore the depths of their collections on Saturday 24th February.

Hailing from Poland but raised in Detroit, Magda has made a name for herself as an artist unaware of boundaries, crossing mediums to immerse herself in everything from dance music to fashion and art. Starting off as an opener for Richie Hawtin, Magda’s fearlessness quickly earned her the attention of some of dance music’s most influential players, with relentless quality permeating all of her creative endeavours.

Mike Servito’s journey has proven similarly impressive, though his ascent to the top of the dance music tree has been a little less immediate. Considered a best-kept secret in his hometown of Detroit and then New York for many years, Servito’s talents could eventually be hidden no more as he dug deep at The Bunker in Brooklyn with a residency that finally earned him far-reaching attention. Making an impression wherever he has plied his trade, residencies at Ghostly’s Untitled, Sass and more have allowed him to perfect his art, slinging together techno, house and acid numbers with distinction, and now Mike Servito finds himself a DJ in demand with all the tools needed to assert himself as one of Detroit’s most prestigious children. Heading to London’s XOYO next month, Servito and Magda will show exactly why dance music belongs to Detroit.
