Roy Ayers, Gilles Peterson, GoGo Penguin and a whole host of other superb artists will be playing at Soundwave Festival next year. Taking place at its usual home in the Croatian town of Tisno, the festival will showcase some of the best talents in jazz inspired dance music, offering a breadth of electronic acts across a wide variety of genres.
An originator of the jazz funk and acid jazz sub-genres, Roy Ayers has been a heroic figure for several decades, even coined the “Godfather of Neo Soul” by many of his adoring fans. Topping a bill alongside Brownswood Records boss and radio personality Gilles Peterson, Ayers sets a sky-high benchmark for Soundwave to match with the rest of its bookings, but the festival’s organisers appear delighted to rise to the challenge.
Manchester live band GoGo Penguin will be relishing taking up their place on stage in the beautiful East Europe holiday spot, with their breakbeat infused jazz sure to go down smoothly with Soundwave’s warm and friendly crowd. Another close follower of the foundations that the likes of Ayers have laid down, Brownswood’s Yussef Kamaal will be similarly excited, not least for being asked to play a festival that includes wonderfully eclectic selectors like Rinse FM’s Josey Rebelle and Donna Leake of Brilliant Corners.
Also throwing Horse Meat Disco’s super groovy choices and the US hip-hop of Egyptian Lover and MNDSGN into the bag, Soundwave’s first phase of announcements has already set the festival up as a potential highlight in the summer calendar, even though many more names have yet to be announced.
