Thundercat’s dead cool, isn’t he? As distinctive a character as you’re likely to find in jazz-based music at the moment, the Californian bass magician took to the stage with the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week, offering the grooviest of performances with an exquisite rendition of “Them Changes”.
As tight as live performers get, Thundercat is a virtuoso talent, laying down complex bass arrangements under sweetly sung vocals without even the remotest indication of effort.
Decorated in sparkling shades, an elf-like red, yellow and green ensemble and an enviable six-string bass guitar, the lauded funk specialist showed exactly why he’s been guest of honour on some of the trendiest albums of the last few years, with Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus and Kamasi Washington among those who’ve enlisted his services.
Thundercat plays at The Albert Hall on Manchester on Wednesday 15th November, with tickets likely to sell out very soon.
