World Island returns for 2018, for a weekend celebrating the best in alternative genres in Leeds this May. 2017 Mercury Music Prize winner Sampha will headline on the Friday night, offering his stripped back, raw piano and vocals combination that gained him the recognition he deserves, and with support yet to be announced, you can bet the acts on warming up duties will be well suited and of a similar calibre. Saturday 26th May sees a full day of music, including jazz composer Alfa Mist, lo-fi R&B and indie crossover act Yellow Days, a live set from Nightmares on Wax and a headline performance from London hip hop hero Loyle Carner, who’ll be performing tracks from his highly-acclaimed jazz and hip hop fused album Yesterday’s Gone. Sunday’s finale will see New Zealand band Unknown Mortal Orchestra complete the weekend, with their psychedelic tinted sounds closing a day which also features a set from 6Music DJ and genre blender Gilles Peterson spinning an eclectic mix, Ibibio Sound Machine performing from their electronic afro-punk back catalogue, new wave jazz group Ezra Collective and more. Leeds just got an inner city, mini-festival on its summer schedule and it looks like a pretty unmissable affair.
