On May 31st, two techno heavyweights take to The Warehouse Leeds to play for Selective Hearing and Abstract, in what promises to be a generous serving of undeniably raw and heavy sounds. To help see in the new month the prosperous Leeds clubbing brand have teamed up with Abstract and have recruited the talents of Berghain and Ostgut Ton resident Marcel Dettman as well as UK techno pioneer, Surgeon. This double whammy of headliners will be gearing up and descending upon The Warehouse in Leeds in just over two weeks.
Ostgut Ton and Berghain are two institutions that will hold a special place in the hearts of many techno fans. The first beckons as one of the genres most prolific labels, and the latter resides as being one of the world’s most infamous nightclubs, both house the first of the two headliners, Marcel Dettmann. As a resident at the notorious German weekend destination, Berghain, Dettmann appears on an almost monthly basis and has been a regular since the very beginning. His style relentlessly pulls together dance music styles from all corners of the globe, layering them under his pulsating drums and powerful basslines. Ostgut Ton, as well as his own imprint MDR, has been the canvas on which Marcel Dettmann has drawn most of his productions, having released over 10 EP’s on the label. As well as this, his tracks have also been seen on 50 Weapons, Desolat and Synewave amongst a host of other labels.
Anthony Child, more commonly known as Surgeon has been a driving force in the UK techno scene since his early tracks were amiably fronted by the genres first wave of artists including the motor city virtuoso, Jeff Mills. Surgeon’s debut EP (Magneze) was hailed as techno of the highest quality amongst other UK releases, and consequently sent Child on a rampage of impressive production, now boasting music on labels such as Tresor, Blueprint and Soma. Surgeon’s sound today shares an industrial darkness with Dettmann, however influences from hip-hop, electro-pop and experimental groups give it a unique difference, which will provide us with an exciting altercation in style.
Joining the two headliners will be Selective Hearing residents Reflec, Kahwe and Olsen as well as a rooms two and three offering a further choice of music, with line ups for these still to be announced.
