If you had to name 3 highlights of 2012 for mono_cult what would they be?
Matt: Our last party at Canal Mills was a big milestone for us, our biggest party outside of the ones that we do at the Faversham, and Joy O ripped the roof off!
Being involved with Hideout festival over in Croatia was an amazing week, our Boat party with the Jaunt guys was once again a highlight of the summer!
The 5th Birthday was a great night even though Henrik couldn't play at that one unfortunately due to illness (even more reason to come on NYD) we still had a memorable one with Axel Boman and Joy O both playing extended sets. We then threw a legendary afterparty at The Garage before it officially opened as a club, for most people it was there first time to the venue, it was packed to the rafters till 10am when The Garage shutters opened to let everyone out on the street, it’s definitely one we won’t be forgetting for a while!
A lot of people seem to have knocked New Years Eve on the head now and save themselves for New Years Day, which in Leeds means only one thing, mono_cult. It’s become a really important party in the calendar, you must be proud of what you’ve started...
Brad: Yeah we're really proud, we could never have imagined that it would grow into to such a huge event when we did our first NYD party five years ago. We joined forces with dirty disco to share the risk as it seemed a strange concept at the time. In the early days a large part of the crowd were still up from the night before, however now people seem to take it easy and save themselves for our event which is ace!
What’s been your favourite of the NYD parties you’ve thrown?
Matt: I think my personal favourite was 2010, Soul clap came over and opened the party with a four hour set so the Fav was packed from the off. It was the first year we'd added the marquees outside to bring a new dimension to the party and it was also one of Midland's first sets under his new alias. Brilliant day and night.
The production and work done on the venue has developed over the years, what can everyone expect this year?
Brad: Well firstly the Fav has undergone a refurb this year, so it’s looking ace inside! As for the production, we always try to do something different, we've re-jigged the layout of the marquees and gone all out on decor etc. so we hope people will be into it!!
What was the thought process behind this year’s lineup?
Matt: We like to keep it varied and a line up to bring a bit of all sorts....
Henrik was number one priority and happy to finally have him play after 6 years of chasing him. Jackmaster is a 'jack' of all trades and it’s going to see him play one of his 'Tweak a holic' sets in the boogie tent which will be 80's disco, party vibes and then he'll play again later in the mainroom. Bicep have been on fire this year, so had to be on the line up. We've also confirmed them for our Sonar party which we will be releasing in January 2013 ;) We saw Mano Le Tough play at Panoramabar at the beginning of the year and it was one of the best sets we've heard and wanted to book him ever since. Krystal Klear has impressed us with all of his mixes and Boiler Room shows, we felt his style would be perfect for the 14 hour marathon. Lauer produced one of our favourite albums of the year so we're happy to bring him over for his Leeds debut.
Last year was the first time you put one of the headliners in the outside marquee. Are you planning on spreading the headliners across the venue again?
Brad: Yes the headliners will be spread across 3 of the 4 rooms, mainly because we physically can't fit them all on the line up in the main room, but also because the atmosphere is always is ace in the outside marquees so it’s only right we let one of the main artists take the helm!
