On Friday 2nd of September, London promoters The Doctor’s Orders have the pleasure of welcoming two heroes for a one-off show at The Garage, in the form of legendary hip-hop duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth. The show will see Rock and his smooth accomplice celebrate 25 years since the release of their debut EP All Souled Out.
As a producer, few can match the prowess of Pete Rock, a contemporary of the likes of Wu Tang Clan, Notorious BIG, Nas and Public Enemy, among other deity-level rappers with whom Pete shares writing credits. Drawing on elements of the funk sampling that his hip-hop forefathers had pioneered, Rock rose to become one of the most distinctive producers around, with his penchant for jazz coming to define the sound that would soundtrack some of the most timeless of hip-hop tracks.
Alongside CL Smooth, Pete Rock also made himself a superleague star as a performer in his own right, with the duo’s two full length albums Mecca & The Soul Brother and The Main Ingredient quite rightly becoming top ten hits in Billboard’s R&B and Hip Hop album charts. Soulful jazz infusions crossed with philosophical lyrics became the duo’s speciality, and it’s the sort of sound that ages like a fine wine; maturing with time; growing richer and deeper.
A special atmosphere can be expected at The Garage for what will be a festive party, and for any hip-hop fans feeling aggrieved at the capital city’s recent slide into house centricity, Pete Rock and CL Smooth are likely to be just what the doctor ordered.
