Hoping to bring the music festival spirit to South East London, the organisers of OnBlackheath have gone out of their way to create a refuge from the working week. This year taking place on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of September, the festival will bring together two days of excellent music, enviable food and outside the box entertainment. Headliners for the 2016 edition include Primal Scream, Belle & Sebastian, and St Etienne among others, with the glorious surroundings of Blackheath Common playing host to the best artists across a wide array of genres, with the organisers placing additional focus on providing for younger audiences.
Rockers Primal Scream and James will be headlining separate days, with only Scottish indie pop group Belle & Sebastian above the latter on the Sunday lineup. Hot Chip’s dancefloor indie will be sandwiched between Primal Scream and the magnificently eccentric Roisin Murphy on Saturday, with NTS Stage enjoying the talents of jazz legend Thundercat, Connan Mockasin and Laura Groves. Neneh Cherry will also serve up a DJ set, whilst Sunday offers Squeeze, Edwyn Collins, Roachford and Craig Charles’ Funk & Soul Club.
First taking place in 2014, the festival was an immediate success, featuring headliners like Massive Attack, Grace Jones, Frank Turner and Young Fathers, and earning a nomination for ‘Best New Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards. 2015 saw OnBlackheath return with Elbow, Manic Street Preachers, Madness, Laura Mvula and Kelis, and 2016 is looking bigger yet, with a striking lineup in London and the inaugural party of sister festival OnRoundhay also opening up in Leeds. With all evidence considered, OnBlackheath must surely be regarded as a party on the up.
