Madchester grooves with a new age shine
Joe Alexander | Reviews

Jagwar Ma
Saturday 18th March
O2 Ritz Manchester

Words by Joe Alexander

Jagwar Ma took to the Ritz on the back of their critically acclaimed 2nd album release ‘Every Now and Then’, and there couldn’t have been a better venue for them to let their blend of psychedelic acid house loose on.

The Sydney three piece are well respected on these shores and clearly found an audience who resonated with their sound. The Madchester influences are recognisable in their beats, but the Happy Mondays they are not – and that certainly isn’t a bad thing. Howling straight into a set that included firm favourites ‘What Love’ and ‘Come Save Me’, the Ritz lapped up the enthusiasm of Gabriel Winterfield.

The strobe lighting mixed with the drum machined manufacturing of ‘OB1’ and ‘Four’ meant for a slightly slower middle section of the gig, probably useful given the sweaty foreheads that were noticeably on view.

Jagwar Ma created an atmosphere that made it almost impossible not to groove – this is music made for the weekend. The synths and the bass guitar of Jack Freeman providing the noise for a well-oiled dance floor to move from 60’s slow motion to arms and legs going akimbo.

Without focusing too much on Manchester and its influence on Jagwar’s music, the band showed a clear appreciation for the native fans who found their melodies so appealing. Noel Gallagher made the point in 2013 that “The future of the galaxy depends on the Jagwar Ma record”, and whether that was an exaggeration or not, let’s hope that the four year gap we endured between albums one and two isn’t replicated. We need bands like this: no frills, just alternative dance to lose yourself to.
