In Review: Jayda G, All Night Long at Wire, Leeds

Sophie Okonkwo | Reviews

From Vancouver to Leeds, last weekend saw house and disco queen Jayda G grace the decks of the Wire basement. It was exciting to have Jayda G behind the snug decks at Wire, a stellar booking and an extended all night long set - all the makings for a memorable night.

After huge success with the label Freakout Cult that she runs alongside DJ Fett burger, Jayda G rose to fame last year, charming party goers worldwide with her vivacious style.

Jayda G had her archive of records on hand, ready to take us through a voyage of old school house and disco, in a cosy club with a heavy Funktion One sound system. It is clear when watching Jayda that she has worked extremely hard over the years to make her mark on the house and disco scene and her passions are clearly pumped through her sets.

All night long sets provide DJs with the opportunity to showcase a variety of genres, set the precedent for the entire night, share all their favourites and take the crowd on a journey.

As the night got later, Jayda began to delve into a collection of heavier italo house tunes.

Before taking us back to the 70s with 2 much-loved Loleatta Holloway tunes: 'I May Not Be There When You Want Me (But I'm Right On Time)' that was met with crowd cheers, followed by 'Love Sensation'.

Jayda humbly interacted with us from behind the decks, mixing serenely and dancing along with the crowd. Despite playing from 23:00 - 05:00, her energy did not waver, and she was seemingly enjoying the party as much as the crowd who were feeding off her fiery energy.

The floor was swarmed until 5am, when she slowed things down and closed the night with Ice Cube’s classic ‘It Was a Good Day’ - easily a personal highlight of the night.

It was the first party I attended at Wire in 2019 and easily one of the best that they have hosted. Upon leaving I felt increasingly excited for future All Night Long parties and the listings Wire has to offer for the rest of the year.
