Liverpool’s SoulFest will welcome Lemar to Arts Club on Saturday 8th October, with a strong supporting cast of singers, DJs and bands to mark the day festival’s second year. Running the inaugural SoulFest last year, organisers Soul Inspired added the party to the monthly Soul4Soul and Soul Reach events that have been a fixture in the Liverpool live music calendar since 2012, intensifying their pursuit of what they refer to as the #SoulRevolution. With Lemar, Ronnie Herel, Shezar and more on this year’s bill, the revolution appears to be going from strength to strength.
Tottenham’s Lemar Obika, more commonly known by his first-name only, came to the attention of the British public way back in 2002, when he appeared as a contestant on BBC talent show Fame Academy, placing third behind David Sneddon and Sinead Quinn. The show earned him a lucrative contract with Sony Music, and before long he was supporting Justin Timberlake on a UK tour. 6 studio albums later, Lemar’s velvety voice and emotional neo-soul has seen him become a huge figure in the UK’s soul and RnB circuit, and a fitting headliner for this event.
Also joining for the soul-soaked festivities, RnB DJ Ronnie Herel and the magnificent vocal talents of ShezAr will be on show, with Joy Oladokun representing a folkier side to the night’s musical offerings. Both armed with crystal-clear voices and skilled in conveying deep emotion in their music, Shezar and Joy will no doubt complement the headliner perfectly, with Herel’s selections ensuring that the party never loses its charm. Local acts including Grace Kim and Mersey Wylie will relish the opportunity to play with such a talented group of artists, but none should be fearful of standing alongside such respected peers, given the fantastic output that has earned them a growing fanbase in recent months and years.
SoulFest is already looking like a potential highlight of Liverpool’s October events, so whether you’re a fan of resonant live performances or enjoy getting down on the dance floor, the day festival ought to be just the kind of soulful excursion that you’ll love.
