The Ritz is Manchester’s leading live music venue, located next to the Rochdale Canal just a stone throw from Manchester Central Station. Today it is a popular destination for both club nights and reputable live music acts to showcase their talents in a large yet intimate space. This year sees a plethora of exciting events coming to the Ritz, which is making the night spot one of the favourite venues of many around Manchester and further afar.
Built in 1928, The grade II listed Ritz was originally a dance hall for revellers to gather and dance to classical music, which then boasted a revolving stage and was an essential destination to visit through the 1930’s and 40’s. The decline of classical music provoked The Ritz to turn into a live music venue around the 1960’s, consequently hosting many reputable artists of that time including The Beatles. By the 1980’s, The Ritz Manchester had firmly established itself as a live music venue, with bands like The Smiths and The Happy Mondays playing memorable shows at the venue, as well as fronting up and coming acts who’s shows at The Ritz played a big part in their rise to fame. Further on towards the beginning of the new millennium, The Ritz kept going from strength to strength, with notable performances from many of the worlds favourite live musicians and bands including R.E.M, Snow Patrol, Arctic Monkeys, The Stone Roses and Adam And The Ants amongst many others.
2011 saw The Ritz in Manchester undergoing a £2 million refurbishment, which brought new life to the venue, whilst still maintaining the classic aspects including the bouncy dance floor as well as retro style décor, balconies and bars. The main stage that is the setting for most of the action is true to that of most other live music venues however is neatly surrounded by the lighting and PA system that really packs a punch. With bars either side of the stage, it makes it easy to escape the crowd if a break is what you need. Even more, the balcony level provides great views of the main stage whilst being moodily lit up by surrounding spotlights and one further bar, a relaxed yet still fully involved angle to enjoy a night at The Ritz.
The live music that takes place at The Ritz in Manchester is an eclectic mix of both well established acts as well as a compelling plethora of up and coming artists, who are hoping to follow in the footsteps of their inspiring elders. In the coming months the likes of Bunny Wailer, Buzzcocks, Chronixx, La Roux, Peter Hook & The Light, Tom Browne & Keni Burke, Bipolar Sunshine, Jungle, Boomtown Rats, Alex Clare, The War On Drugs, Chet Faker, Christina Perri and Taking Back Sunday are all appearing live at The Ritz Manchester, and that’s not all.
The venue is also a respected host of many club nights including The Warehouse Project’s official Afterlife party as part of Parklife 2014.
