New bar, restaurant and party space Wringer + Mangle has earmarked Thursday nights in East London as its territory, and is casting out its sweet scent with an enchanting lineup for May and June.
Kicking things off on the 5th, Ibibio Sound Machine bring elements of West African highlife, psychedelia, disco, soul and even a little post-punk, synthesising Nigerian heritage and the London dance sound to create modern electro soul of the highest order. Singer Eno Williams leads the show with a silk-smooth and spirit-seeking voice; a funky and spacious musical backing adds the extra shine.
The 12th sees Gideon Conn step up with his strangely merry delivery of dry wit and often disarming lyricism. Humorous, cheeky and inventive, Gideon borrows from hip hop and soul but refuses to reside within the parameters of either, using a finger-picked guitar as his main tool in the casting of a confusing and engaging spell. New single ‘Crystallised’ is on the way, and this launch party will complement it with some audiovisual spectacle in the form of an interactive video, just to make sure that you’re fully entranced.
Brighton’s label and crew of Brazil fanatics Mr Bongo send forth a hip hop favourite on May 19, with the distinctive Karol Conka taking to the stage. Debut album Batuk Freak earned her a lot of respect in Brazil and across the world, and she’s fast becoming a hit over here too.
The last Thursday in May has another standout booking, with KOG and the Zongo Brigade delivering the energy of Afro-fusion rhythms and melodies from Ghana via Sheffield whilst Retrospective For Love showcase a male-female vocal partnership backed by groove heavy jazz and dashes of hip hop and electronica. A laid back and dance-orientated live act, they’ll be supported by Wormfood DJs on the 26th.
Another off the soul-specialist label Wah Wah 45s, Paper Tiger is a more bleep-enhanced outfit than label mate Gideon Conn, often conducting similar ventures into wordplay but focussing on futuristic hip hop beats and grime, breaks and dubstep inflections. The six-piece will launch their new album Laptop Suntan with a full live band performance on June 2nd, assisted by friends Bastian Keb (DJ), Sarah Williams White and Wu Lu (both live), as well as a few choice Wah Wah selectors.
