The Savoy Theatre is up there with London’s most esteemed theatrical houses, lying on the Strand in Westminster. Famously the first public building anywhere in the world to be lit entirely by electricity, the Savoy was built on a site with an incredible history; a palace burned down during the peasants revolt, a hospital built by Henry VII and a military prison all stood on the same ground, before a fire in 1864 left only stone walls and the Savoy Chapel standing. Turned into a theatre specially for a series of Gilbert and Sullivan operas in 1880, the Savoy would go on to hold mightily impressive premieres including Oscar Wilde’s Salome in 1931, Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward and a healthy serving of operas and Shakespeare productions. Rebuilt again in 1939 and 1993, the theatre is Grade II listed and provides 1,158 seats for its guests. Tickets for Dreamgirls and Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 are both currently on sale for the venue.
